UK VAT rates and calculation formulas
For most goods and services, the standard UK VAT rate is 20%. A reduced 5% rate and a 0% zero rate apply to specific supplies. Check the treatment of the actual goods or services rather than choosing a rate from the price alone.
gross = net × (1 + rate). To remove included VAT, use net = gross ÷ (1 + rate).
Rates reviewed 24 August 2026 against GOV.UK VAT rates. Tax rules can change; confirm the correct treatment before filing or issuing a VAT invoice.
